The Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church has issued a statement about the case where a 23-year-old schizophrenic nun died in a monastery as a result of exorcism. The monk and 4 nuns responsible for the dead of the young woman have been charged with murder.
For news in English about the case click here (external link) Press release from The Holy Synod:"The Holy Synod notes with dismay and sorrow the reports from the press and from the Diocese of Huşi, that at the Monastery of the “Holy Trinity” in Tanacu village, county of Vaslui, hieromonk Daniel Corogeanu, assisted by four nuns, submitted a young sister, Irina Cornici, under pretext of an exorcism, to unacceptable suffering which caused her death. Exorcism (that is, prayers for the expelling of evil spirits) is part of the doctrine and practice of the Universal Church, based on Holy Scripture, and consisting exclusively of prayers and sprinkling of holy water and anointing with blessed oil. Any acts or procedures beyond these, such as those used at Tanacu, are considered serious deviations from Church discipline. Bearing in mind the seriousness of this tragedy and the refusal of those involved to obey the first disciplinary measures of the church authorities, the leadership of the Diocese of Huşi was obliged to take urgent steps to apply maximum sanctions against hieromonk Daniel Corogeanu and the four nuns. The Holy Synod took note of these sanctions. Due to the uncertain status of the Monastery of the “Holy Trinity” and its refusal to obey the authority of the Diocese of Huşi, this tragic event is the first of its kind in the history of the Romanian Orthodox Church, and cannot be in any way considered emblematic or definitive of Romanian Orthodoxy. At the same time, there is no danger that this will become example to be imitated in our monastic or parochial communities. As the principle of synodality also involves that of co-responsibility, the Holy Synod has decided that every hierarch should take steps in his eparchy to ensure strict observance of the Holy Canons and liturgical order, as well as of the decisions of the Holy Synod, so that ritual excesses be removed or prevented, as appropriated, and for applying sanctions against self promoting spiritual leaders and irregular financial interests which usually lie behind such practices."
