Porto Alegre, Brazil, Feb 16 - Part of the Catholic delegation to the 9th GA of the WCC, cardinal Walter Kasper and bishop Brian Farrel held a press conference focused on the ecumenical relationship of the Roman Catholic Church and the World Council of Churches.
Despite the fact that the Roman Catholic church is not a member of the World Council of Churches, it is "committed to the ecumenical relations since the Vatican II and this committment is irrevocable", said Cardinal Walter Kasper, who is president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian unity. He continued by recalling the radically different ecumenical environment of his own youth. "In my own childhood and youth, I never would have stepped into a Protestant church." But times are different now and for example, "the European Union is not economical, but also ecumenical", he claimed. This means that globalization and higher integration have changed the face of Christianity and inter-relations between Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant and Pentecostals are now extremely significant.
Bishop Brian Farrel, who is the secretary of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity confirmed the affirmations of Walter Kasper and said that the Catholic Church "very much wishes to go forward and strengthen its relationships in front of all the challenges that lie ahead."
