Respresentatives of 550 millions Christians worldwide are gathering in Porto Alegre, Brazil, for the World Council of Churches 9th assembly. This is the first General Assembly of the new millennium and the first Assembly ever to take place in South America.


Numerous issues shall be on the General Assembly agenda as it is 8 years since that many churches have gathered. The theme of the assembly is "God, in your grace, transform the world". During the 10 day event different plenaries will take place:

14 February  - Opening Plenary and Opening Worship

15 February - Reports of the Moderator of the Central Committee, Catholicos Aram I, and of the General Secretary Samuel Kobia.

16 February  - "Economic justice - A world without poverty is possible!"

17 February - "Christian identity and religious plurality"

18 February - "Youth overcoming violence"

19 February - "Latin America plenary"

20 February - "Church unity - Claiming a common future"

21 February - "God, in your grace, transform the world"
