Desmond Tutu - photo: Habitus Porto Alegre, Brazil, Feb 20 - During a surprise visit Nobel Peace Prize winner archbishop Desmond Tutu addressed the World Council of Churches’ Assembly in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
He was warmly received in a full plenary hall by the participants of the assembly at the end of a session on church unity. Tutu used the occasion to once again thank the WCC for it support during the time of apartheid, but he also addressed current issues prompting for a more inclusive view on human beings.

According to Tutu all human beings belong to God wherefore we need to embrace everyone more openly. Men, women, black, white, gay, so called straight all are welcome and the archbishop added that both the US President George Bush and Osama Bin Landen belong to God’s children.

"Bush, bin Laden, all belong, gay, lesbian, so-called straight - all belong and are loved, are precious."

In a later press conference he expounded that viewpoint: “We do not take seriously enough that God is God for all. I am glad that I am not God, but I am glad that God is God.” It is Tutu’s conviction that God has to accept both Bush and Bin Landen as his children.

Quoting a Russian saint Tutu said that man become more openhearted the closer he gets to God.

Christian do "not have to feel insecure in the face of people from other faiths", Tutu added. The bishop disclosed that he has never tried to convert anybody. “We should look at what Jesus says!” Jesus did not try and convince anyone, but he said “come and see”. So the others should see how Christians love one another “Then they may say: Hey you got something there man – or woman!”

Desmond Tutu‘s visit was only announced two days ago and came as a surprise to the participants of the assembly. He is the second Nobel Peace Price winner to address the assembly Sunday Adolfo Perez Esquivel spoke at a plenery on Latin America.
