AARHUS (Habitus) - Prof. Viggo Mortensen, University of Aarhus - Denmark, hosted a seminar today on the role of Christianity in Denmark. Among the speakers were prominent intellectuals and a parliamentarian who gave their perspective on the religious situation in Denmark.

The occasion of the seminar was the publishing of the book “Christianity Undergoing Change. Pluralism as Challenge to Theology and Church in Denmark” by prof. Mortensen. The book examines what challenges the Lutheran state-church faces today where society is moving from a mono-situation - characterized by mono-cultural and mono-religious - to a multi-situation - characterized by multi-culture and multi-religious. The seminar ended with a discussion lead by Habitus patron prof. Peter Lodberg.

Denmark has historically been a very homogeneous society both ethnically and religious. This is now rapidly changing with Muslims being the second largest religious group in the country. Denmark, however, is still dominated by one church with 83% of the population being members of the Lutheran church.

Book: Christianity Undergoing ChangeThis volume is the 3rd book published by the Danish Pluralism Project, a research project dedicated to the study of the new religious situation in Denmark

Prof. Viggo Mortensen is leader of the Centre for Multireligious Studies at Aarhus University
